Reiki Update Training teleclass begins Sept. 8

We're extending the Early Bird Discount for our Reiki Update Training teleclass until August 20. The regular fee for the class is $65, but if you register before August 20, you pay only $45.

If you were trained back in the 20th Century, or studied with a teacher who was, it's likely that some of what you learned has since been supplanted by more recently discovered information. Were you taught that Reiki founder Mikao Usui was a Christian medical doctor and university president? It turns out that wasn't the case after all. Or did you learn that Reiki was an ancient Tibetan Buddhist technique that Usui "rediscovered"? That, too, is misinformation (for one thing, Tibetan Buddhism isn't ancient).

But there's an even more important reason to update your training: to prove that you've met standards over and above you original certification. All you have to do is pass the final exam at the conclusion of the course, and you'll qualify for listing in our new directory as well as referrals from The Reiki Digest and The Reiki Dojo. And you'll get a certificate of updated training to attest to your achievement.

Updating your training will also help you better represent Reiki to your clients, students, and community.

There will be a quiz: Our new Reiki Training Update teleclass

Whenever a new student comes to me, I explain before we begin that if their only goal is to get a certificate, they can just design and print one for themselves without a teacher. I don't recommend that, but I bring it up because with Reiki, there is no way to tell from looking at a practitioner's certificate how much training they've had, or their teacher has had, what the quality of that training was -- or even if the student and teacher have ever met in person. Certificates are usually dated, so it is possible to find out how long it's been since a practitioner was trained, but that doesn't give people much to go on, either.

That's why we've decided to make the certification for The Reiki Dojo's new Reiki Update Training more meaningful. And we'll be offering the training as a teleclass so that practitioners can join us from anywhere. Students who successfully complete all course requirements will receive a certificate to prove they've done so: and one of those course requirements will be a final exam. Those who pass it will not only receive a certificate, but they'll be eligible for our referral list and other benefits. We will stand behind that certificate by confirming, by phone, email, or on paper, to clients and students that the practitioner whose name is on it has met certain standards.

Practitioners from all lineages are welcome to sign up for the Reiki Update Training classes, but for now we'll be admitting only Level 2 practitioners or above, and we will need a copy of your Reiki certificate when you register.

So, has it been more than a few years since your Reiki training?

Our cherry-viewing party is tomorrow morning!

If you're in the New York City area, we invite you to join us Saturday morning, April 25, at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden for a cherry-viewing gathering.

We'll meet at 10:30 a.m. at the small ampitheater-like area between the Japanese pond and the Celebrity Walk, where there are some convenient stone benches. It's nearly in the center of this map of the garden. From there, we'll take a stroll around the pond and then visit the Kuramayama cherry tree, which just began blooming. That's as close as we can get to Mt. Kurama this year, but one of these springs we hope to visit the birthplace of Reiki and see the cherry blossoms there.

Admission to the garden is free until noon, and here are the directions for visitors arriving by public transit or by car.

Although cherry blossom viewing in Japan usually involves a picnic under the trees, picnicking is prohibited at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, but there is a very nice outdoor cafe there.

Blossoming!

The cherry trees are in bloom in Japan and Washington, D.C., and this week the buds began bursting open here in New York. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a handy CherryWatch map to follow the action.

That means it's time for us to reveal another upcoming event in our first ever Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrating not only the return of spring here but the upcoming second anniversary of The Reiki Dojo and third anniversary of The Reiki Digest.

Last week, we told you about one event: Amanda Jayne's April 22 talk at The Reiki Dojo in New York on the legacy of Chiyoko Yamaguchi, student of Chujiro Hayashi and founder of Jikiden Reiki.

And now, another event, the first-ever Reiki Digest/Reiki Dojo field trip: It's a visit to Kuramayama -- specifically, the Kuramayama cherry tree and its neighboring cherry trees at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Japanese garden. (Perhaps next spring, we'll be able to take you to Kuramayama, the mountain.) On Saturday, April 25, we'll meet at the garden at 10:30 a.m. to observe the blossoming cherries and enjoy a Reiki meditation. Medical Reiki expert Pamela Miles, author of REIKI: A Comprehensive Guide, has worked for decades to serve as a bridge between the medical culture and alternative medicine. Pamela has practiced Reiki in the operating room with Dr. Mehmet Oz, taught medical Reiki classes in the U.S. and beyond, and is the founder of I*ACT, the Institute for the Advancement of Complementary Therapies.

Beyond the limits of space and time: (Prerequisite: Level 1 Shoden.) After your initial training and your first 21 days of practice, return to the Dojo to take your Reiki practice to a deeper level, where spirituality and quantum physics intersect. You'll discover the power of the Reiki symbols and mantras as used in traditional Japanese Reiki practices. Students who complete all program requirements will receive a Reiki 2 (Okuden) certificate in Usui Reiki Ryoho, and will be eligible to attend The Reiki Dojo's weekly private sessions for advanced students.

The Reiki Dojo at Nurture's Path

Beginning Monday, February 4, 2008, The Reiki Dojo has a new long-term home at Nurture's Path, 1133 Broadway, Suite 1020 -- right down the hall from our old location. We meet on Monday evenings, beginning at 7 pm. with a one-hour private session for Shinpiden and Okuden graduates in the International House of Reiki lineage only. We open our doors to all at 8 p.m. Reservations are highly recommended; call 917-512-1330 for reservations or more information. $10 minimum donation.
